My New iPhone

52 projects to get you started By John Virata

Just bought an iPhone and want to know more about what it can do and how to fully exploit its use for your digital pleasure? My New iPhone by Wallace Wang is a pretty good book to get you started on learning things about the iPhone that you might not have known existed.

The 438 page book (yes, 438 pages) by No Startch Press covers iPhone OS 3.0 and offers up 52 projects to get you on track on the capabilities of Apple's smart phone. It offers up a range of topics such as how to customize your iPhone moving the icons, and changing the wallpaper, use Skype to make free calls, create your own ringtones, view weather information and traffic hotspots for your area, get flight information, and more.

Sample book sections cover such things as modifying your iPhone, browsing the internet, charging your iPhone's battery and conserving its use, controlling the user interface, recording voice memos, storing contact information, viewing maps, playing games, and resetting and troubleshooting. These are just a few of the topics covered in the book. Rather than sectioned in chapters, the book is comprised of individual projects, 52 in all, complete with sample images relevant to the project at hand, as well as How to directions that enable you to complete the project.

Each project starts with a new topic in big letters, which makes for easier reading. Also featured is a project goal that is the basis for the chapter, such as learning how to type, save, and find notes on your iPhone (Project 35--taking notes), or Listening to Groups of Songs (Project 20). It is an easy read, and the table of contents enables you to get right to the projects that you want to work on and skip those that you may already be familiar.
